A lateral history of architecture can be written through mechanisms rather than styles. In this history, the decisive question is not what a building looks like but what kind of rule makes it possible for elements to enter relation, transform and produce consequences. Llull supplies the elementary proposition: a finite set of principles can generate an expanded intellectual field through combination. Kircher turns that proposition into a knowledge machine whose diagrams, tables and procedures operate across heterogeneous domains. Caramuel introduces the conditional rule, showing that geometry becomes more rigorous when it can survive displacement into oblique and inclined states. Across these three figures, architecture first appears as a problem of formal organisation: elements acquire power through the explicit procedures governing how they may be combined and transformed.

Kiesler moves the mechanism from formal knowledge into environment. Correalism treats reality as continual interaction among organism, tool and technological or natural milieu, making the relation more fundamental than the isolated object. Shinohara then demonstrates that a relational system does not require synthesis. Opposition can remain invariant while form changes radically, and the geno-form can generate a new whole whenever another element enters the composition. Fujii makes the same problem syntactic: the meaning of an architectural element changes when the code organising its relations changes. Together, these figures establish an architecture in which coherence no longer depends on resemblance, stylistic unity or a predetermined total image. It depends on operational continuity across transformations. Wachsmann gives this relational intelligence a precise tectonic form. The connector establishes compatibility among standardized components and therefore determines the range of assemblies the larger system can support. The joint becomes a protocol: a local rule governing global possibility. Pask adds feedback, learning and evolution. His cybernetic architecture internalises time by asking the architect to define not only an initial configuration but the constraints under which a system may change, what it may learn and how users enter its regulatory loops. Architecture moves decisively from composition toward operation. A building is no longer simply an object delivered at one moment; it is an environment whose future states are partly structured in advance through rules of interaction.

Zenetos distributes this operation across information networks. Electronic Urbanism makes communication, tele-activity and replaceable infrastructures constitutive of the city, while treating mobility and fixed programme as variables rather than permanent givens. Abraham then removes the final requirement that operation must culminate in conventional construction. Written, drawn and built architectures are different states of a discipline capable of acting through theory, notation and conceptual models. The unbuilt can therefore possess architectural reality when it establishes a rigorous relation between idea, syntax and anticipated material consequence. This does not dematerialise architecture; it enlarges the range of media through which architectural operations can be specified. Taken together, these ten figures describe the gradual emergence of an architectural condition that can be named an operating system. An operating system is not a visual style and does not dictate every result produced within it. It provides protocols, interfaces, permissions, memory structures, constraints and procedures through which multiple processes can run while remaining mutually intelligible. Their historical discontinuity is an advantage: the recurrence of the same operational problem across unrelated moments suggests a persistent architectural lineage rather than a single movement. Socioplastics extends this lineage at the scale of epistemic infrastructure. Its nodes, markers, bibliographies, DOI deposits, works, media and interfaces can be treated as parts whose importance depends on how they connect and what transformations their protocols permit. A marker can operate like a rule when it remains legible across changing materials and scales. A bibliography can behave as relational memory. An index routes movement. A DOI stabilises a version without terminating future development. Readers create temporary assemblies; platforms provide interfaces; new nodes modify the larger configuration while inheriting constraints from earlier states. The field becomes architectural not by resembling a building but by specifying how heterogeneous elements may enter relation and continue to act.
