There is a kind of intelligence that has nothing to do with representation, with holding a model of the world in some internal mental space — it is the intelligence of a surface that knows how to receive what touches it, to transform it, to extract from it what is useful and release what is not, without ever needing to "understand" in any propositional sense what has occurred. Guattari's account of the three ecologies — mental, social, and environmental — refuses to treat these as separate domains governed by separate logics, insisting instead that they are interpenetrating registers of the same processes: a mind is not contained within a skull any more than an ecosystem is contained within a boundary on a map, both are open systems defined by what flows through them, what they take in and transform and pass on. A surface organized around this kind of processing — receptive, transformative, non-representational — might be described as a DigestiveSurface: not a wall that keeps things out, and not a mirror that represents what is outside, but a membrane whose entire function is metabolic, converting whatever crosses it into something the system on the other side can use, discarding the rest as waste that itself becomes input for some other system downstream. Federici's account of the body under capitalism — particularly the reproductive and domestic labor that capital depends upon but refuses to recognize as labor — describes a body forced to function as exactly this kind of digestive surface for the economy at large: absorbing the wear, the exhaustion, the unpaid work of social reproduction, converting it into the renewed labor power that capital can then extract value from, while the conversion itself remains invisible, uncounted, structurally denied the status of "production." What happens at this surface — the actual transformation, the breaking-down that converts input into usable output — is not a single event but a process with its own internal stages, its own chemistry, which might be called ProteolyticTransmutation: borrowing the biological term for the breakdown of proteins into their constituent amino acids, which can then be reassembled into entirely different proteins serving entirely different functions — the raw material is not destroyed but disassembled to the point where it becomes available for new combinations that its original form could never have entered into. Puig de la Bellacasa's account of care as a fundamentally relational, often invisible labor — the maintenance work that keeps systems, ecosystems, and bodies functioning, work that is rarely counted as significant precisely because its success looks like nothing happening, like things simply continuing — describes ProteolyticTransmutation at the scale of everyday maintenance: care breaks down the raw fact of a body's needs, a system's wear, an ecosystem's depletion, into the specific small actions — feeding, repairing, replenishing — that can address them, actions that look like nothing in isolation but that constitute, in aggregate, the entire condition under which anything else can continue to happen. Stengers's account of "cosmopolitics" — the demand that we slow down, that we refuse the rush to premature synthesis or premature solution, that we let the different parties to a controversy actually be transformed by their encounter with each other rather than simply defeating or absorbing one another — names the temporal dimension that ProteolyticTransmutation requires: breakdown into usable components takes time, cannot be rushed without producing waste rather than transformation, and a DigestiveSurface that is forced to process too quickly does not digest, it merely damages. The Socioplastics project's recurrence scanner — built precisely to identify which nodes, which operators, which citations have been sufficiently broken down through repetition and cross-reference to be considered stable, versus which remain raw, freshly introduced, not yet metabolized into the corpus's working vocabulary — operates as a DigestiveSurface for the corpus as a whole, with ProteolyticTransmutation as the slow, Stengers-style process the scanner is designed to track rather than accelerate.

Every field, every discipline, every body draws a line — not always visibly, not always intentionally, but constantly — between what belongs within it and what remains outside, and the character of this line determines almost everything about how the field can grow, what it can absorb, what it must reject. Derrida's account of the archive insists that this line is never simply given but is itself an act of power: the archive is not a neutral container for what happened but an active determination of what counts as having happened at all, what gets preserved as evidence and what is allowed to disappear without trace — the archive's boundary is drawn by the same gesture that constitutes its contents, there is no archive prior to this drawing. A boundary that operates this way — constitutive rather than merely descriptive, producing the inside it appears only to delimit — might be called a PorousBoundary: porous not because it is weak or permeable in any simple sense, but because its very function is to allow certain things through while appearing, to those inside, as if the boundary had always been exactly where it currently is, as if the inside had a stable identity that merely needed protecting rather than being continuously produced by the boundary's selective permeability. Agamben's account of the state of exception describes the political version of this same structure: sovereignty is constituted precisely through the power to decide what falls outside the normal order, to draw the line that determines who counts as fully within the law's protection and who can be suspended from it — the exception is not a rare departure from the rule but the mechanism by which the rule's boundary is continuously redrawn and thereby maintained. If the boundary itself is porous, constitutive, and continuously redrawn, then what gives a field its sense of stability — its sense that it has, after all, a recognizable inside that persists over time — must be something else: not the boundary's location, which shifts, but the threshold's capacity to occasionally, performatively, close. This might be called ThresholdClosure: the moments, often ritualized, when a field declares — through a publication, a citation, a canonical reading list, a degree requirement — that something has now definitively crossed over, has become part of the inside in a way that (for the moment, performatively) cannot be undone, even though the boundary that this closure ratifies remains, structurally, as porous and redrawable as ever. Arendt's account of action and the public realm is instructive here: for Arendt, an action only becomes fully real, only enters the world in the durable sense, when it is witnessed and remembered by others — the threshold between a merely private gesture and a public act that has "happened" in the full sense is crossed not by the actor alone but by the act of being received, recounted, incorporated into a shared world. ThresholdClosure operates similarly: a term, a node, a finding does not become part of a field's stable inside merely by existing, but by being received in a way that performs its incorporation — cited as established, taught as foundational, assumed rather than argued for. Nancy's account of community as something that exists only in its being-shared, never as a substance that individuals possess and then bring into relation, suggests why ThresholdClosure can never be final despite its performative force: a community, like a field, exists only in the ongoing activity of being shared, which means every closure is also, simultaneously, a reopening — the moment a term is canonized is also the moment it becomes available for the next porous boundary to draw on, cite, repurpose, recontextualize. The Socioplastics project's own DOI deposits function as a series of ThresholdClosures of exactly this Arendtian kind — each deposit a performative "this has now happened" — even as the PorousBoundary around the project as a whole remains, by design, redrawable with each new Tome, each new node reopening what the previous closure seemed to settle.
