Every gardener eventually learns the counterintuitive lesson that a plant grows better after you cut parts of it away. Systems generally share this property and are just as generally analysed as though they did not. Growth gets measured by addition — more nodes, more connections, more throughput — while the subtractions that made continued growth possible go unrecorded, because removal produces no artefact worth archiving the way addition does. A pruned branch leaves no trace in most system diagrams; a new one gets a label. MaintenanceReturn names the recurring, unglamorous work of cutting back that keeps a system legible enough to keep expanding at all — the return, in both financial and cyclical senses, that subtraction pays into future capacity. Organisations that only ever add roles, features or commitments, never retiring any of them, do not describe healthy growth; they describe accumulation heading toward collapse under its own uninspected weight. What was removed is often more informative than what remains.
