Fischer-Kowalski and Haberl provide a historical-material vocabulary for treating societies as organised regimes of material and energetic exchange. Socio-economic metabolism names the throughput by which social systems take in resources, maintain stocks and release wastes; colonization names the deliberate transformation of natural systems so that they perform according to social purposes. Metabolic scale cannot be understood apart from the labour, institutions, technologies and cultural norms that make specific forms of colonization possible, while environmental transformation cannot be treated as an external side effect of an otherwise autonomous economy.
