The coherence of such a process does not come from simultaneity. It comes from a carefully maintained relation between compact theoretical inputs, a real environment, an explicit task and a response addressed to the specificity of what has been produced. Microlearning provides the temporal grammar for this arrangement: targeted units can reduce cognitive overload and increase flexibility when they remain attached to specific objectives and to an ensuing act of application (Monib, Qazi and Apong, 2025). Place-based education provides its spatial grammar: the surrounding city, neighbourhood, landscape or institution is not an example added after theory but a field in which theory must prove capable of organizing attention (Yemini, Engel and Ben Simon, 2025). The epistemic object produced by this arrangement is neither the lecture nor the assignment. It is a situated observation that has survived several transformations. A participant encounters a proposition, tests it against a familiar environment, selects a site, marks a plan, makes photographs, writes a description and submits an interpretation. Each operation reduces some complexity while exposing another. The resulting work is therefore small but epistemically dense. A map drawn by a municipal technician can disclose which boundaries become visible when risk is named; a photograph can register which forms of shade or vegetation count as restorative; a short text can reveal which words a locality uses for care, insecurity, proximity, abandonment or resilience. Place-based education makes clear that locality carries ecological, cultural and political meanings rather than merely geographic coordinates, while nature-based learning demonstrates that environmental qualities acquire significance relationally, through the actions and experiences that a setting affords (Falzon and Conrad, 2024). What matters is not that eight cities answer identically, but that a stable protocol permits difference to become legible.
Feedback is the hinge that prevents asynchronous learning from collapsing into content distribution. A standardized platform can deliver identical audio files to hundreds of participants, but learning changes category when an informed person looks closely at one participant’s specific site and returns an answer proportionate to it. The literature on online feedback shows that educational effects depend not simply on the existence of response but on its design, timing, criteria, environment and uptake (Taghizadeh Kerman et al., 2024). In a situated model, individualized feedback does more than grade completion. It calibrates observation. It can ask why a boundary was drawn in one place rather than another, why a tree was classified as amenity rather than infrastructure, why a route considered ordinary by one participant appears inaccessible to another, or what evidence supports a claim that a space restores attention. This response makes the learner’s environment newly questionable. The distinction from the mass online course is therefore not technological sophistication but the preservation of individual address within a scalable structure. Open education extends this address beyond the individual encounter. UNESCO’s Recommendation on Open Educational Resources understands openness through the capacities to access, reuse, adapt and redistribute materials, while insisting on inclusion, equity, quality and sustainable institutional arrangements (UNESCO, 2019). The significance of this framework is especially clear in multilingual or transnational education. A common theoretical core can circulate across countries without requiring identical local expression. Audio lectures, PDFs, bibliographies, base maps and methodological sheets may remain openly available, while each cohort recontextualizes them through its own sites, vocabulary and institutional concerns. Open science adds a second layer: the outputs of learning can become a documented knowledge corpus when methods, provenance and conditions of reuse are made explicit. UNESCO’s open-science framework links accessibility with scrutiny, collaboration and the reduction of scientific inequalities, making publication only one stage in a larger infrastructure of verifiability and participation (UNESCO, 2021). This is where the model becomes operational for Socioplastics. A course distributed across cities can be understood as a temporary knowledge infrastructure whose primary material is not educational content but the relation between common protocol and situated difference. The archive produced by such a system would contain short texts, annotated maps, photographs, local vocabularies, environmental observations and feedback traces, each attached to a place, a date, an authorial position and a shared methodological grammar. The corpus can then be read vertically, as a set of individual investigations, and horizontally, as a comparative field. Recurrences become visible without being imposed: certain forms of shade, enclosure, noise, vegetation, care, risk or social accessibility may repeatedly appear, while other categories remain resolutely local. Science-open publication allows those differences to persist rather than being flattened into a single regional score. The infrastructure therefore makes comparison possible without pretending that places are interchangeable. Situated asynchrony adds a specific capacity to Socioplastics: it turns distributed learning into a method for producing comparable environmental knowledge without severing that knowledge from the people and places that generate it. Its strength lies in the economy of its means. A small number of recorded communications can travel widely; a brief field exercise can force precise attention; a map and a photograph can anchor an argument; individualized feedback can preserve pedagogical intensity; an open archive can extend the life of the exercise beyond certification. The theoretical and practical distinction is therefore exact: scalability is achieved by repeating a grammar, not by repeating reality. Each territory remains resistant, specific and linguistically permeable, while the protocol supplies enough continuity for differences to acquire analytic value. Within Socioplastics, this condensation of movement, locality, interpretation and transmission becomes WalkableWisdom.
