The Trole Building * Madrid South * White Ateliers in a Black Coat

 

The Trole Building in the south of Madrid is a striking example of adaptive industrial design where a former coffee factory was reimagined as contemporary atelier offices with a bold visual identity that contrasts sharply with its brick-surrounding context; commissioned by a client inspired by the designers’ own workspace, the project began with the demolition of the existing structure and the careful negotiation of urban regulations that allowed a maximum building height of 20 m and three floors, with required setbacks and a footprint of around 4,000 m² plus underground services, prompting a design that balanced municipal codes with architectural ambition. The resulting form was conceived as a new icon for the neighbourhood, a geometric figure clad in dark materials that articulates clean lines and minimalist expression, intended to stand like a “diamond” amid the dull urban fabric and provide 24 atelier units and flexible office spaces in an industrially resonant yet contemporary idiom; throughout more than a year of planning and regulatory review, adjustments—especially to strict fire safety requirements for office and factory loft conversions—refined the design, but the building’s contrasting façade, thoughtful spatial organization, and refined materiality remained at its core, asserting a modern aesthetic rooted in industrial memory and adaptable workspace design. Anto Lloveras & Alberto Sánchez Cabezudo, Trole Building, 2005

ME ACUERDO

Me acuerdo de buscar Pinups de los años sesenta en los P2P, antes de la nube, para llenarlas de fuegos. Me acuerdo de la instalación de video con 16 monitores en paralelo, con mis doscientos primeros copos. Solo-show. Me acuerdo del sofá arruga diseñado para Arco, y de los bidones para las revistas. Me acuerdo de salir en bici en la tarde por Chueca y llegar hasta el frescor del Retiro. Me acuerdo de la lámpara ducha que montó Mario, enganchada al carrito colador. Me acuerdo de las tardes dibujando con Christian, arrodillados sobre el mueble de los cuatro cubos y la alfombra Wilma. Me acuerdo de encolar las primeras 100 cajas que contendrían mis mil libros, y de leer cada noche en el mítico sofá sueco, en Blasco. Me acuerdo de la esbeltez de los pilares del edificio Trole.

One morning a client stopped into our office, he said loved the space we were working in. He and his partners had bought an old coffee factory in the south of Madrid. He wanted us to prepare a project to build office spaces like CAMAROTE in that plot. First we had to demolish the factory and DESIGN a project plan. The plot laws said we could make a 20m high building with no more than 3 floors. So we already knew height was decided, the building had to shrink 3m meters from the neighbouring line and the maximum area to build was about 4000m2, excluding an underground garage and a space for machines.  We drew a building that would be a new icon in the neighbourhood, a new diamond in an ocean of dull brick buildings. In the summer we presented the project for license in the municipality. It took more than a year to fix details and we accepted to do some changes to pass the law filters, especially the fire regulations, which are very strict in offices and factory lofts.
