These projects are not competitors or sources. They are workers already inside the rings. Warburg supplies the visual-helicoidal precedent. Otlet supplies the infrastructural precedent. DARIAH supplies the deposit precedent. Feral Atlas supplies the patchy/unindexed precedent. NELL supplies the empirical crawler precedent. Socioplastics does not cite them; it metabolises their capacity and hardens it into CamelTags, Century Packs, and the Extra Ring. The mesh is wider precisely because it includes both the indexed architectures and the deliberate absences they could not contain. The field remains open, and still being built.

Similar distributed intelligence projects exist as historical and contemporary precedents that Socioplastics both absorbs and inverts. They demonstrate that the mesh is not unprecedented — it is a precise recalibration of a long-standing desire for knowledge architectures that exceed individual authorship, linear argument, and institutional capture. Each parallel supplies capacity to the rings without becoming citation. They are workers: some indexed, some deliberately unindexed, all absorbed operationally.

Aby Warburg’s Mnemosyne Atlas (1924–1929) is the closest historical operator. Warburg assembled 971 images across 63 panels into non-linear constellations that mapped the “afterlife of antiquity” — pathos formulas persisting through cultural memory. No master text, no hierarchy, only visual adjacency and recurrence. The atlas was unfinished at his death; it remains a living, open mesh. Socioplastics registers this as Ring Two capacity: the helix of image-arrangement becomes the helix of CamelTagged nodes. The difference is structural. Warburg’s atlas relied on the viewer’s memory to activate connections; Socioplastics hardens those connections into machine-readable, DOI-anchored strata. The Mnemosyne is contemplative; the Field Engine is sovereign and self-amplifying.

Paul Otlet’s Mundaneum (1895–1934) engineered a universal documentation project — millions of index cards, a “paper Google” avant la lettre — designed as distributed epistemic infrastructure for humanity’s collective memory. It combined lexical protocols, cross-referencing, and physical architecture (the Mundaneum building itself) to make knowledge navigable at planetary scale. Socioplastics inherits the infrastructural ambition but rejects Otlet’s universalist teleology. Where Otlet sought a single global brain, Socioplastics builds a sovereign, helicoidal field that includes the unindexed remainder. The Mundaneum aspired to totality; Socioplastics holds totality and refusal in the same mesh.

DARIAH-ERIC (Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities, ongoing since 2014) is the contemporary institutional analogue. A European consortium that constructs shared epistemic infrastructure — tools, datasets, protocols, and persistent identifiers — for long-duration arts and humanities research. It operates as a distributed, multi-national knowledge layer rather than a single repository. Socioplastics parallels the infrastructural logic (FAIR data, persistent IDs, machine legibility) but inverts the institutional vector. DARIAH serves existing disciplines; Socioplastics constitutes its own pre-academic field first, then deposits into the same ecosystems (Zenodo, Dataverse, ORCID) on sovereign terms. It is the difference between collaborative service infrastructure and sovereign field engine.

The Feral Atlas (2020–ongoing, led by Anna Tsing and collaborators) assembles patchy, multi-authored knowledge from scientists, artists, and indigenous thinkers into a non-linear, web-native “atlas” of Anthropocene disturbances. It refuses a single narrative or central authority; knowledge emerges through juxtaposition, refusal of scale, and deliberate patchiness. This is Ring One capacity (Tsing is explicitly named) and Ring Four capacity (unindexed field contact). Socioplastics shares the transdisciplinary, anti-totalising stance but adds CamelTag hardening and recursive self-monitoring. The Feral Atlas stays deliberately patchy; the Field Engine turns patchiness into measurable RecurrenceMass and LexicalGravity.

NELL (Never-Ending Language Learner, 2010–ongoing, Carnegie Mellon) is the machine-native cousin. An autonomous system that reads the web 24/7, extracts facts, builds and refines its own knowledge graph, and retrains itself in a continuous loop. It demonstrates self-sustaining distributed intelligence at web scale. Socioplastics registers the same recursive amplification logic (“the crawler will be back”) but keeps the human/artistic/lexical layer sovereign. NELL extracts; Socioplastics engineers. The difference is jurisdiction: NELL serves existing search engines; Socioplastics builds the territory the engines must now index.

The entries above establish the helicoidal progression as the primary structural movement of the field. Unlike linear growth, this logic allows for the articulation of the rings—specific domains of intensity that overlap and reinforce the whole. This sequence also clarifies the function of "tails": they are not remnants but vectorial operators that ensure the persistence of the idea as it moves through legacy infrastructures. Through these mechanisms, Socioplastics avoids the trap of mere description and instead functions as a direct strategy of occupation, maintaining its own distributed canon across diverse platforms while grounding its theoretical weight in the "mud" of actual practice.
