The Room Is the School: Portable Education, Prompt Culture and the Dense Urban House of Knowledge

The new classroom is not disappearing; it is being redistributed into rooms, laptops, speakers, libraries, housing blocks, repositories, feeds, drives, prompts and language models. Education no longer belongs exclusively to the school building, the university campus or the cultural institution; it now operates through a portable and situated ecology of attention. A domestic table, a laptop, a microphone, a folder of PDFs, a cloud archive, a public library seat, a neighbourhood walk, a bookmarked post, a prompt chain and a shared screen can form a classroom if they are connected by method. This is not the fantasy of frictionless digital learning. It is a more demanding condition: the house becomes school, the library becomes public aula, the barrio becomes curriculum, the archive becomes room, and the prompt becomes an architectural device for organizing thought. The central question is therefore spatial, political and epistemic at once: how can learning remain rigorous when it has left the classroom, entered the home, passed through the platform, and become inseparable from the dense city?

UN-Habitat (2024) World Smart Cities Outlook 2024. Nairobi: United Nations Human Settlements Programme.

The World Smart Cities Outlook 2024 repositions smart-city development around people-centred governance, public capacity, rights, standards and ethical data infrastructures. Its iconic idea is that smart-city maturity cannot be reduced to technological deployment; it depends on whether digital systems are aligned with local needs, inclusion, regulation, participation and institutional competence. The theoretical contribution is a normative reorientation of smart urbanism away from vendor-led efficiency and toward public-value urban intelligence. Methodologically, the report operates through strategic agendas, case studies, policy dimensions and governance domains, treating smart-city development as an institutional ecosystem rather than a device catalogue. Its conceptual operation is civic digitalisation: technological systems become urban only when embedded in public accountability, data protection, human rights and environmental regulation. It bridges global urban policy, digital governance, infrastructure standards, civic participation and development studies by showing that smart-city futures are questions of political capacity as much as technical capacity.

Pinkster, F.M. and Loomans, D. (2024) ‘Urban belonging as place-based affect’, Social & Cultural Geography. doi: 10.1080/14649365.2024.2407159.

Pinkster and Loomans propose urban belonging as place-based affect, a process emerging through everyday encounters with the social and material city rather than a stable feeling of being at home. The iconic idea is that belonging can intensify, fracture, detach or turn into rejection as urban conditions change. Their empirical focus on Amsterdam during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic allows belonging to appear as differentiated affect: contentment, anxious detachment, disenchantment, alienation and refusal. The theoretical contribution is to shift belonging from identity language to affective geography, showing how inequalities are lived through encounters with domestic space, public space, neighbourhood atmosphere and disrupted routine. Methodologically, the work reads qualitative experience as relational urban evidence, connecting affect to everyday practice. Its conceptual operation is affective differentiation: the same city produces unequal emotional capacities across residents. It bridges urban geography, affect theory, pandemic urbanism and inequality studies by making belonging a diagnostic category of urban life.

Operational Workflows for the Socioplastics Matrix

The twenty-seven operators are designed as a functional toolkit that can be used across writing, research, curation, urban analysis, machine retrieval and semantic indexing. Each operator links a concept to a public post, a DOI, a downloadable PDF, machine-readable data and the central Project Index.

Operators of a Field

Socioplastics advances a decisive grammatical turn in contemporary artistic research by treating the operator not as ornament, metaphor, or auxiliary concept, but as the infrastructural unit through which a field becomes readable, durable, and transmissible. Its nine triads and twenty-seven calibrated terms displace the privileged artwork, exhibition, and autonomous essay in favour of a self-indexing architecture where knowledge is maintained through recurrence, positional address, and scalar coherence. Production is no longer object-genesis but metabolic regulation: terms such as metabolic pulse and recursive pentagon describe a corpus that modulates heat, pressure, and informational flow rather than merely accumulating artefacts. Epistemologically, figures such as HomoEpistemologicus and the positional essay refuse sovereign detachment, installing thought as situated habitation within records, interfaces, datasets, citations, and public syntax. The most revealing case is the project index itself, which functions as a living field console linking tomes, cores, books, channels, DOI anchors, repositories, and machine-readable datasets; it does not simply catalogue Socioplastics but performs its central thesis that infrastructure can become theory. Through operators of scale, territory, institution, body, temporality, and pedagogy, the field demonstrates how local nodes remain answerable to global architecture without collapsing into totalisation. Consequently, Socioplastics proposes that post-medium practice must abandon representational critique as its final horizon and assume operational maintenance as an ethical and epistemic responsibility: the twenty-seven operators do not describe a field; they constitute one. Evidence at the Threshold of Power: Forensics, Performativity, Coloniality and Computational Space (Weizman, Butler, Berlant, Povinelli, de la Cadena, Brown, Parisi, DeLanda) · LAPIEZA LAB · Anto Lloveras · Socioplastics · 2026

Evidence no longer appears after violence, identity, territory or power have taken place; it is one of the fragile media through which they become perceptible at all. Weizman’s forensic architecture begins from this exact instability: contemporary violence often occurs below or near the “threshold of detectability”, in zones where states command superior optics, signals and secrecy, while victims, lawyers, architects and publics must reconstruct events from partial images, damaged memories, ruins, shadows, sound, smoke, fragments and absence. The house model rebuilt with a drone-strike witness does not simply illustrate testimony; it entangles architecture and memory until the fan, the courtyard, the child’s walker and the black hole become spatial instruments of truth under asymmetric vision. Butler’s performativity gives this evidentiary field a bodily grammar: identity is not an inner substance expressed through acts, but a historically constrained repetition through which the body materializes social meaning; what seems natural is a regulatory fiction stabilized by performance, sanction and recognition. Berlant moves the same logic into affective time: the present is first sensed as an impasse, a thick and mediated condition in which subjects remain attached to promises that block the satisfactions they offer. Cruel optimism names the scene in which survival, hope and social belonging continue to bind people to damaged forms of life. Brown then names the governmental rationality that converts democracy, citizenship, education, law and conduct into economic metrics: neoliberalism does not merely privatize institutions, it remakes the subject as human capital and hollows out the demos from within. Ndlovu-Gatsheni’s coloniality of power exposes why juridical independence cannot be mistaken for epistemic or ontological freedom: colonial rule persists through cultural, political, sexual, spiritual, economic and epistemic matrices that continue to manufacture reality, subjectivity and hierarchy after formal decolonization. de la Cadena’s Andean cosmopolitics deepens this displacement of inherited categories by showing how indigenous political practices exceed politics as the modern state usually defines it; when Pachamama enters constitutional language, nature is no longer a passive object of policy but a participant in a field where ontology itself becomes political. Povinelli radicalizes the problem through geontopower, where late liberalism governs by separating Life from Nonlife and by managing which existents can be treated as agents, resources, beliefs, absurdities or extractable matter. Parisi’s computational architecture adds a nonhuman formal pressure: algorithms are not simple instructions but performing entities that select, evaluate, transform and generate spatiotemporalities; computation cracks the fantasy of smooth control because randomness, incomputable probabilities and patternless data enter the program from within. DeLanda’s assemblage theory supplies the scale logic: social entities are not seamless totalities or reducible aggregates, but emergent wholes made from heterogeneous parts, institutions, networks, practices, laws, buildings, flows and classifications that retain partial autonomy while producing new properties. Across these works, power is never simply imposed from above; it is repeated, sensed, classified, modelled, inherited, economized, territorialized and contested through forms that appear minor until they become decisive. A gesture, a file, a stone, a drone image, a ruined classroom, an algorithm, a legal category, an attachment, a border, a fan blade, a mountain, a body in repetition: each becomes evidentiary when the system that once rendered it background begins to tremble.

The Civic Life of Infrastructural Legibility: Urban Data, Logistics, Knowledge Infrastructure and Cultural AI (Lefebvre, Söderström, Datta, Estlund, Mounier, Quek, UNESCO) · LAPIEZA LAB · Anto Lloveras · Socioplastics · 2026

Legibility has become one of the decisive political materials of the contemporary world: not the old legibility of maps, files and administrative grids alone, but a more pervasive condition in which cities, archives, platforms, bodies, cultural forms and logistical chains must be formatted before they can circulate, appear, be governed or be remembered. Lefebvre’s right to the city, as reread by Costes, remains the first pressure point because it refuses to treat urban space as a finished container; the city is a collective production, and the violence of generalized urbanization lies in the way this production is captured by capitalism, segregation and the disappearance of the traditional civic form into a planetary urban condition. Sanaan Bensi and Marullo extend that disappearance through logistics: neoliberalism does not simply occupy territory, it smooths it, translating ports, containers, warehouses, transport systems, labour rhythms and information flows into a rationalized architecture of exchange. Söderström and Datta’s urban data politics gives the same architecture its crisis interface, where dashboards, platforms, war rooms and civil-society tactics reveal that data does not merely describe the city but redistributes authority within it. Jiang and Sperandio place this redistribution inside smart governance, where technical systems can only become politically meaningful when they are held against institutional routines, civic agency, ethical frictions and situated urban differences. Quek et al. formulate the conundrum with particular clarity: city digital twins promise integration, yet technological proliferation often produces fragmented micro-solutions, interoperability failures and proprietary lock-ins; semantic approaches and knowledge graphs matter because they offer not only data transfer, but relation, context and cross-domain intelligibility. Estlund supplies the media-archaeological underside of this condition by showing that online access is structured through HTML, metadata, search engines, social media protocols and optimization manuals; visibility is not a natural reward of quality, but a negotiated position inside gatekeeping infrastructures. Mounier and Dumas Primbault then widen the frame: knowledge infrastructure is a fragile ecology of skills, conventions, software, materials, publics, governance bodies, standards, maintenance and repair, always torn between invisibility as technical support and visibility as public accountability. UNESCO’s report on artificial intelligence and culture adds the cultural threshold of the same problem: AI reorganizes rights, authorship, diversity, heritage, bias and cultural commons by altering the protocols through which culture is encoded, extracted, valued and redistributed. The political question running through these materials is therefore not only who owns the city, the data, the archive, the model or the platform, but who defines the grammar through which they become searchable, interoperable, trustworthy and durable. What once appeared as background support now acts as form; what once appeared as neutral circulation now produces social order; what once appeared as technical access now becomes a public field of conflict. Legibility is not transparency. It is an infrastructural operation, and it always asks who is being made visible, under what protocol, for whose use, and at what cost.

A digital twin is never only a technical replica. It is a political address system. It speaks to engineers, planners, software, sensors, administrations, interfaces, citizens, vehicles and models at once. DualAddress names this condition: the need for urban knowledge to communicate simultaneously with human subjects and machine systems without collapsing one into the other. This reader studies inclusive mobility, digital twins and urban belonging as one field because movement in the contemporary city is increasingly mediated by models, but belonging is still lived through bodies, memories, attachments and unequal access. The European debate on inclusive and sustainable urban mobility provides the first frame. Mobility can no longer be treated as a narrow transport-sector problem. It is ecological, social, digital, spatial and institutional. Electrification, autonomous vehicles, logistics systems, artificial intelligence and connectivity must be read alongside children, older people, disabled users, transport poverty, public participation and municipal capacity. The future of mobility is not simply a future of cleaner or smarter movement. It is a future of differentiated access.

Digital twin research brings this problem into technical focus. Li and colleagues’ concept of Digital Twin Federation is especially useful because it refuses the fantasy of one total urban model. Mobility systems are distributed across infrastructures, platforms, behaviours, sensors, institutions and temporal scales. Their twins must be federated rather than monolithic. The inclusion of human-in-the-loop architecture is crucial. It recognises that urban mobility cannot be governed by automated representation alone. Stakeholder judgment, behavioural uncertainty and public deliberation must remain inside the model. Nag and colleagues’ review of transport digital twins sharpens this through classification. Many systems described as digital twins are actually digital models or digital shadows. A model represents. A shadow receives data. A twin requires interaction, connection, service and feedback. HybridLegibility becomes relevant here because the urban twin must be legible to both technical systems and public actors. If a twin can be understood only by specialists, it risks becoming another opaque instrument of governance. If it is simplified only for public display, it may become symbolic theatre. The challenge is hybrid readability.

Urban correction begins when the city’s official descriptions are no longer trusted as sufficient. Displacement, gentrification, misrecognition, datafication and infrastructure often produce realities that standard planning language cannot adequately register. KnowledgeFriction names the productive resistance that appears when evidence, lived damage, institutional categories and public truth do not align. It is not confusion. It is the necessary friction through which better urban knowledge becomes possible. This reader begins with displacement beyond removal. Knieriem, Lagendijk and van Leeuwen’s work on Rotterdam’s Tweebosbuurt shows that gentrification is not only the physical relocation of residents. It is also misrecognition: humiliation, civic erasure, disregard, denial of standing and the destruction of social dignity. Residents do not only lose space. They are told, directly or indirectly, that their attachments, histories and claims matter less than redevelopment narratives.

Schnelzer’s processual theory deepens this by distinguishing becoming displaceable, feeling displacing and un/doing displacement. Displacement is not a single event. It is a distributed condition that begins before eviction and continues after relocation. It includes vulnerability, anticipation, fear, manoeuvre, adaptation and the gradual reorganisation of everyday life. Elliott-Cooper, Hubbard and Lees call this un-homing: the destruction of home’s conditions before, during and beyond physical movement. Slater’s return to Marcuse insists that displacement must remain central to gentrification theory, not treated as an incidental or difficult-to-measure side effect. KnowledgeFriction emerges because these experiences often exceed available data. A rent increase can be measured. A demolition notice can be archived. But humiliation, anticipatory anxiety, loss of neighbours, symbolic erasure and civic disrespect are harder to count. This does not make them less real. It means urban knowledge must expand its evidentiary forms. DiagonalReading becomes a secondary operator because the problem must be read across categories: housing, affect, law, infrastructure, race, class, data, cartography, public language and bodily exposure.

Place is not known only through representation. It is known through atmosphere, repetition, bodily exposure, memory, sensory attention and the traces left by use. SensoryTrace names this mode of knowledge. It captures the residual contact between body and environment: the way a street is remembered by sound, a threshold by light, a neighbourhood by smell, a public space by trust, a route by fatigue, or a lost home by trauma. This reader builds the sensory and methodological chamber of Socioplastics. Jane Jacobs opens the field with the sidewalk. The “eyes on the street” are not simply a planning slogan. They describe an ecology of informal attention produced by mixed uses, small transactions, active frontages, children, shops, dwellings, time and public trust. Urban order emerges from ordinary complexity. Jacobs turns everyday observation into method. She gives the city back to those who inhabit it, watch it, use it and repair it through routine.

Tuan’s Topophilia adds affective depth. Place is not a container of activities. It is charged by love, fear, memory, symbolic value, cultural training and embodied experience. Environmental perception is never purely optical or functional. It is emotional and cultural. SensoryTrace therefore does not record neutral impressions. It records the ways in which environments become meaningful to bodies and communities over time. Fullilove’s root shock introduces the traumatic edge of place. Dispossession damages the connective tissue of community. When neighbourhoods are destroyed, the injury is not only spatial. It affects memory, institutions, social networks, collective action and psychological continuity. This is crucial because atmosphere is not always pleasant. Atmospheres can be wounded. A city can carry the trace of demolition, exclusion, fear or abandonment. SensoryTrace must therefore include loss.

Böhme’s aesthetics of atmospheres provides the conceptual centre. Atmosphere is the felt quality of space between subject and object. It emanates from things, arrangements, lights, sounds, materials and bodies, but it is realised in perception. It is neither merely subjective nor purely objective. This makes it a rigorous urban category. Architecture, scenography and public space are always producing atmospheres, even when they claim to produce only function. The stage set becomes a paradigm because it openly composes mood, orientation and presence.

Thibaud gives this atmospheric thinking an urban method. Ambiance is produced through sensory experience, built environment and bodily activity. Walking is not merely movement within the street. It participates in making the street. The passer-by alters the ambiance by moving through it, attending to it, slowing down, avoiding, gathering or drifting. This aligns with Socioplastics as a reading practice. A corpus is not only consulted. It is traversed. The reader leaves a route through it.

Sarah Pink’s sensory ethnography formalises this as research. Knowledge is produced through smell, touch, sound, movement, media, imagination and participation, not sight and speech alone. Sensory method is especially relevant to urban and architectural research because the built environment acts before it is explained. One feels scale, friction, exposure, comfort and disorientation before one translates them into language. Borgman’s Big Data, Little Data, No Data adds the infrastructural counterpart. Sensory knowledge must still be stored, described, attributed and made reusable. This is where LegibleArchive and RawIndex enter as secondary operators. RawIndex names the substrate: the gathered material before interpretation fully stabilises it. LegibleArchive names the organised field through which that material becomes findable without losing context. VibrantRecord names the active record that continues to affect the field after capture.

For Socioplastics, SensoryTrace is more than an aesthetic operator. It protects the corpus from pure abstraction. A field made of texts can still carry atmosphere if its writing preserves contact with body, place, fatigue, temperature, walking, shade, memory and repair. The reader layer itself becomes a sensory infrastructure: a way to prevent bibliography from becoming dry inventory. Each reference carries a mode of perception. Jacobs brings the sidewalk. Tuan brings attachment. Fullilove brings trauma. Böhme brings atmosphere. Thibaud brings walking ambiance. Pink brings embodied method. Borgman brings scholarly infrastructure. At 6K, Socioplastics must remain inhabitable. Density alone can suffocate. SensoryTrace asks how the corpus feels as a field: where it opens, where it thickens, where it allows drift, where it repairs orientation, where it becomes too opaque. Knowledge infrastructure is not only technical. It has atmosphere. The task is to make an archive that can be entered bodily, conceptually and machinically without losing its lived charge.

Nordic ground is not a style. It is a scalar condition where climate, welfare, atmosphere, public architecture, material endurance, transport planning and embodied experience meet. ScalarArchitecture names the capacity to move between building, territory, institution, atmosphere and body without losing the relations that hold them together. This reader situates Socioplastics within a northern architectural and civic field, not as regional nostalgia, but as a test of how welfare form, climatic pressure and public habit become spatial intelligence. Northernness is the first conceptual threshold. It refuses the reduction of the North to snow, timber, melancholy light or clean design. The North is a contested spatial category produced through darkness, cold, maintenance, public culture, durability, ecological pressure and geopolitical imagination. It is not essence. It is condition. For Socioplastics, this is useful because the corpus also seeks condition rather than image. A field must develop climate. It must be inhabited through recurrence, not merely recognised by branding.

Architecture and Welfare gives this climate a political body. Scandinavian modernism cannot be read only as formal restraint. Schools, libraries, housing, nurseries, public interiors and open spaces helped materialise welfare as lived infrastructure. Architecture participated in the production of equality, habit, care and citizenship. ScalarArchitecture is essential here because welfare does not operate at one scale. It appears in state policy, municipal planning, corridor width, daylight, furniture, threshold, playground, library table and daily route. Welfare form is scalar by nature. The lineage of Aalto, Utzon and Fehn adds a phenomenological and tectonic depth. Huxtable’s reading of Sverre Fehn frames architecture as an interruption that reveals landscape. Fehn does not merge innocently with nature; he stages the fragile act of building between earth, horizon and memory. Ferrer Forés’ work on Nordic tradition similarly reads ground, craft, timber, daylight and inherited forms as active modern resources rather than decorative motifs. Tradition becomes operative when it allows abstraction to become inhabitable.

Mobility data justice begins from a simple displacement: transport should not be judged primarily by movement, but by access. A city is not just because it contains roads, vehicles, apps, dashboards or modal options. It becomes just when differentiated persons can reach work, care, education, health, food, shade, public life and social connection without excessive cost, risk, waiting, exclusion or bodily exposure. CitationalCommitment names the ethical obligation to account for what is counted, who is cited by data, who is omitted, and how mobility evidence becomes public responsibility. The ITF’s Sustainable Accessibility for All provides the normative centre. Accessibility shifts the question away from kilometres travelled and toward opportunities reached. This matters because mobility can increase while justice decreases. A city may become faster for some and more fragmented for others. It may optimise flows while deepening transport poverty. Access requires person-based and territory-sensitive metrics: age, income, gender, disability, household structure, settlement pattern, service availability, temporal burden and digital connectivity all matter.

Behrendt and Sheller’s concept of mobility data justice deepens this by showing that movement now generates data almost continuously. Ticketing systems, navigation apps, shared mobility platforms, sensors, vehicles, road infrastructures and environmental monitoring systems all produce traces. But datafication is uneven. Some movements are over-visible and surveilled. Others are absent, informal, too complex or institutionally ignored. MetadataSkin becomes important here because the outer informational layer attached to mobility users can determine how they are represented and governed. The skin is not superficial. It mediates access, risk and recognition. Recent work on mobility equity metrics attempts to formalise fairness within intelligent transportation systems. Bang and colleagues propose a metric combining service accessibility and transport cost, using distributional tools to evaluate fairness. Such work is valuable because it pushes equity into system design rather than treating it as a rhetorical appendix. Yet CitationalCommitment also asks what every metric leaves outside. A Gini coefficient may show distributional inequality, but it may not capture fear, heat, humiliation, disability friction, care work or attachment to place. Metrics must be treated as instruments, not substitutes for politics. AI-powered transportation digital twins add further complexity. Fu and colleagues describe cyber-physical transport twins with sensing, prediction, decision-making and feedback. Their distinction between a twin’s eyes and brain is useful: perception alone is insufficient without interpretation and response. But the political question remains: whose vulnerability does the twin detect? Vulnerable road users may be technically recognised while other vulnerable populations remain invisible. LegibleArchive becomes relevant because mobility data must not be only real-time flow. It must also preserve evidence, provenance, historical inequity and accountability over time. Climate makes mobility justice more material. Cabrera, Ziegler and Schläpfer’s work on targeted cooling of cycling networks shows that heat exposure concentrates unevenly across routes. A small portion of a network may generate disproportionate thermal burden. CDRI’s guidance on heat management in public transport similarly treats heat as an operational and equity issue. Shade, waiting, station design, vehicle comfort, hydration, surface temperature and elderly bodies become transport variables. Thermal stress reveals that access is never abstract. A route may exist and still be unusable under climatic pressure.

Urban legibility is never innocent. A city can become readable to its inhabitants, but it can also become readable to landlords, platforms, police systems, speculative finance, welfare algorithms and administrative extraction. SyntheticLegibility names this double condition: the production of readability through technical, spatial and symbolic systems that may either support civic orientation or intensify exclusion. This reader studies the threshold where legibility becomes expulsion, where digital objects participate in urban sorting, and where the city’s visibility must be politically questioned.

Kevin Lynch’s The Image of the City remains foundational because it gives urban form a vocabulary of paths, edges, districts, nodes and landmarks. Legibility, in Lynch, supports orientation, memory and environmental confidence. The readable city helps inhabitants locate themselves within a meaningful spatial structure. Yet contemporary urbanism complicates this promise. The legible city is not always democratic. When systems of power read neighbourhoods, bodies and behaviours, legibility may become a mechanism of capture. SyntheticLegibility therefore extends Lynch into a critical digital condition: who reads, through which device, for what purpose, and with what consequences?

Situated urban intelligence names the capacity of the city to know itself through distributed, embodied, material, cartographic, affective and reparative operations rather than through computation alone. It rejects the fantasy that urban intelligence resides primarily in platforms, dashboards or algorithmic optimisation. A city thinks through its pavements, libraries, markets, sensors, maintenance crews, infrastructures, walking bodies, contested maps, memories of displacement and atmospheres of belonging or exclusion. Intelligence is therefore not a property of a system but a relation among environments, bodies, media, institutions and forms of repair. Its epistemic ground lies in ecological perception and relational place. Gibson’s affordances make clear that environments are meaningful because they offer possibilities for action to situated bodies, while ecological psychology insists that behaviour emerges through settings rather than abstract individuals. Debord’s dérive and Massey’s global sense of place extend this ground into urban theory: the city is both affective terrain and relational formation, structured by attractions, repulsions, flows, inequalities and histories that cannot be reduced to coordinates. Knowledge begins when movement encounters the patterned force of place.

The political consequence appears wherever urban systems distribute access unevenly. Marcuse shows that abandonment and gentrification are linked mechanisms of displacement; Schnelzer demonstrates that displacement is felt before it becomes removal; Low reveals how spatial arrangements naturalise exclusion; Star exposes infrastructure as a hidden order that becomes visible at the point of breakdown. Situated urban intelligence therefore reads the city through its pressure points: who can remain, who can enter, who is counted, who can complain, who repairs, who is forced to absorb the cost of malfunction, and whose place is made displaceable before policy recognises loss. Its aesthetic and technological dimension is cartographic, sensory and reparative. Corner’s mapping is not the passive reproduction of territory but a projective act that uncovers potential; Gabrys’s sensing technologies demonstrate that environments are increasingly programmed through distributed devices; Mattern refuses the reduction of urban knowledge to computation and restores public knowledge infrastructures; Jackson turns repair into the ethical method of a broken world. Together, mapping, sensing, maintenance and public knowledge form an urban epistemology of correction: the city is known by tracing what fails, what endures, what is sensed, what is mapped, and what can still be repaired.

The Infrastructural Life of Abstraction: Classification, Inscription and Media Space (Sohn-Rethel, Bowker, Star, Latour, Easterling, Mattern, Parks, Deleuze, Guattari) · LAPIEZA LAB · Anto Lloveras · Socioplastics · 2026

The shared question running through these texts is not simply how systems are built, but how abstraction becomes spatially operative. Sohn-Rethel gives the most severe epistemological formulation: abstract thought is not born in the pure interiority of mind, but in the social form of exchange, where commodity relations produce real abstraction before philosophy names it. Bowker and Star move this problem into classification, showing that categories are not neutral containers for knowledge but infrastructures that coordinate labour, produce visibility, distribute suffering and stabilise institutional memory. Latour’s account of inscription extends the same problem into scientific practice: facts travel because they are drawn, fixed, displaced, circulated and recombined through graphic and documentary devices. Deleuze and Guattari provide the counter-image to arborescent order: the rhizome, the assemblage, the book as machine, the field made from exterior relations rather than from a sovereign centre. Easterling then shifts infrastructure from technical substrate to political medium: zones, broadband systems, logistical formats and spatial products govern by disposition, by repeatable protocols, by the quiet power of arrangement. Mattern and Parks deepen the temporal and material register of this claim by treating media infrastructure as urban sediment, signal traffic, cable, tower, ruin, acoustic condition, civic substrate and historical residue. Together, the texts form a precise constellation: knowledge is never merely represented; it is supported, sorted, formatted, carried, exchanged, buried, exposed and made durable by the material grammars that allow it to circulate. The problem is therefore not the opposition between abstraction and matter, but their mutual production. Abstraction works because it has sites, surfaces, standards, routes, diagrams, archives, classifications, media channels and infrastructural habits. Matter becomes epistemic when it is inscribed, named, transmitted, compared, indexed and made available to a public or institutional regime. The nexus is strongest where these authors dissolve the naïve hierarchy between idea and support. The support is not secondary. The category is not posterior to the world. The diagram is not an illustration after the fact. The zone is not only territory. The cable is not only technical. The book is not only content. Each operates as a device for arranging relations, and each relation modifies what can count as knowledge, evidence, locality, memory or public fact. This is why the field belongs together: it reads infrastructure as the hidden morphology of thought, and thought as an infrastructural event whose forms are never innocent.

Critical urban intelligence begins when the city is no longer reduced to a computational metaphor. A city is not a computer, not because computation is irrelevant, but because urban intelligence exceeds calculation. It appears through libraries, streets, trees, thresholds, maintenance workers, archives, informal repairs, civic memory, bodily orientation, material failure and public dispute. MapDimensioning names the capacity to measure this complexity without flattening it. It does not map the city as a neutral surface. It dimensions the urban field as a layered structure where perception, infrastructure, evidence and repair become mutually legible. This reader establishes a first bibliographic chamber for Socioplastics because it turns mapping into an epistemic act. James Corner’s agency of mapping is decisive here: maps do not merely represent space; they uncover latent conditions and project possible futures. In that sense, the map is not a passive document but a speculative instrument. It selects, intensifies, extracts, connects and invents. Socioplastics operates in a similar way. Its nodes, indexes, books and cores do not simply record an existing field. They generate the conditions through which the field can be perceived. MapDimensioning therefore belongs to both urbanism and corpus construction: it asks how a complex environment becomes readable without becoming domesticated.

Debord’s dérive adds another dimension. The city cannot be known only from above, by plan, dashboard or aerial abstraction. It must be crossed. The drifting body detects atmospheres, attractions, barriers and intensities that administrative cartography often misses. This is essential for a post-6K Socioplastics field. A corpus of 6,000 nodes cannot be understood only through index logic. It must also be walked. Readers must be able to drift between operators, archives, fragments, repeated motifs and unexpected thresholds. The dérive becomes a method for reading both city and corpus as terrain. Infrastructure studies deepen this logic. Susan Leigh Star’s ethnography of infrastructure shows that systems become visible when they break. The ordinary support of daily life is usually hidden by its own functioning. Roads, standards, pipes, classifications, forms, databases, protocols and maintenance routines remain background until failure exposes them. Steven Jackson’s broken-world thinking pushes this further by arguing that modern systems are sustained less by heroic innovation than by repair, improvisation and care. Repair is not secondary. It is the ordinary condition of technological and urban continuity.

The Recursive Life of Communication: Neural Logic, Information, Ecology and Social Systems (Shannon, McCulloch, Pitts, Bateson, von Foerster, Luhmann) · LAPIEZA LAB · Anto Lloveras · Socioplastics · 2026

The strongest nexus across Shannon, McCulloch and Pitts, Bateson, von Foerster and Luhmann is the displacement of knowledge from substance to relation: intelligence no longer appears as a hidden essence, interior faculty or sovereign subject, but as a recursive organization of distinctions, signals, thresholds, feedbacks and communications. McCulloch and Pitts formalize nervous activity as a logical calculus, showing that neural events can be treated as propositional operations rather than mystical contents; Shannon strips communication of semantic privilege in order to define information as selection under uncertainty, transmitted through channel, code and noise; Bateson radicalizes this shift by making “difference” the minimal unit of mind, extending cognition into ecology, pattern, play, pathology and civilization; von Foerster turns cybernetics toward the observer, insisting that cognition is not passive registration but active construction; Luhmann then transfers the entire problem into social theory, where society is not made of individuals but of communications recursively reproducing communications. Together, these works do not simply found cybernetics, information theory or systems theory. They produce a new epistemic scene in which thought is infrastructural: it operates through circuits, delays, distinctions, redundancies, closures, environments and second-order observations. The mind is no longer located in the head alone, nor meaning in the message alone, nor society in the human actor alone. Each text attacks a different version of naïve realism: the neuron is not an idea but can behave logically; the message is not its meaning but a selected possibility; the organism is not outside its ecology but patterned by it; the observer is not outside observation but implicated in it; the social system is not a container of subjects but an autopoietic field of communicative difference. The common concept is therefore recursive epistemology: knowledge as the patterned production of distinctions inside systems that can never fully step outside their own operations.

Socioplastics is now operational: six thousand nodes, sixty books, five tomes, twenty channels, DOI anchors, repositories, bibliographies and four million words in circulation. Its 1–3–9–27–81 grammar turns the corpus into a navigable field. Phase two begins from use: less explanation, more activation.

Socioplastics is operational, it holds six thousand nodes, sixty books, five tomes, twenty active channels, DOI anchors, repository layers, bibliographic infrastructure and around four million words in circulation. Its public Project Index is no longer a map of intentions but the console of a working field. Phase one was construction: operators had to be named, tested, sealed and placed in relation to one another; cores had to close; bibliographies had to harden; channels had to take function; the corpus had to become legible as a system rather than as a mass of texts. Phase two begins from use. The grammar no longer needs to explain itself at every entrance. It can operate through compression, recurrence and deployment. Its scalar structure — 1, 3, 9, 27, 81 — gives the field a practical instrument: one thesis, three vectors, nine domains, twenty-seven triads and eighty-one operative positions. This is not ornament but a grammar of navigation. The task now is not endless addition but activation: more texts written from inside the grammar, more essays with less preface, more channels without more noise, more DOI anchors only where conceptual weight requires stabilization, more indexing as infrastructure rather than administration. A living vocabulary appears inside work. ScalarArchitecture can analyze a building; FrictionalMetropolis can enter an urban mobility essay; ExhibitionSurplus can structure a curatorial text; EpistemicLatency can organize a paper on open knowledge. The operator carries the field because the field has already given it mass. Socioplastics now functions less as a project to be introduced than as an environment to be entered. The Index is its public console, the books are its structural rooms, the operators are its instruments, the channels are its circulation system, and the repositories are its hard ground. From here, the work becomes calmer and sharper. The system is already there — indexed, distributed, cited, navigable and operational. Socioplastics is not preparing itself. It is working.

Topolexical Sovereignty becomes fully legible when it is not presented as a solitary concept, but as a matrix: ten absorbed fields, ten defensible intellectual actors, and a set of Socioplastics operators that translate inherited disciplines into an operative corpus. The point is not to prove influence in a biographical or academic sense, but to construct a critical grammar through which the system can be read. Architecture, urbanism, linguistics, media theory, political philosophy, ontology, archive theory, conceptual art, institutional critique, and systems theory do not remain separate domains. They become topolexias: named, repeatable, technically addressable operators that allow the corpus to behave as a city, an archive, a machine, a field, and an artwork at once. The crossing is crucial. Each field has an anchor, but no operator belongs to only one lineage. This is where Socioplastics becomes more than interdisciplinarity: it becomes infrastructural synthesis.

The first layer is the field-entry system. Each field enters through one figure capable of carrying a defensible conceptual load. Architecture enters through Rem Koolhaas, not because Socioplastics imitates his formal language, but because Koolhaas makes architecture think through congestion, scale, programme, mutation, and metropolitan excess. The relevant operators are ScalarArchitecture, MapDimensioning, and LoadBearingStructure. They define the corpus as something constructed, not merely written. A corpus of 6,000 nodes cannot be understood as a sequence of texts alone; it requires dimensioning, hierarchy, structural pressure, circulation, and load distribution. In this sense, the Socioplastics corpus is not a library that happens to contain architectural thinking. It is itself architectural: a system whose internal coherence must be engineered.

Calibrated habitability names the condition in which urban life is judged neither by formal access nor by technical representation alone, but by the capacity of places, systems and data infrastructures to remain inhabitable under pressure. A city may be mapped, modelled, connected and governed while still becoming unliveable through displacement, sensory stress, data opacity or the erosion of attachment. Habitability therefore requires calibration: the testing of official descriptions against embodied experience, institutional arrangements, environmental feeling and the uneven pressures that make some lives more precarious than others.

Its epistemic ground lies in the tension between affection and abstraction. Topophilia establishes that places are not neutral coordinates but fields of perception, memory, culture and value. Digital twin federation, by contrast, insists that urban mobility must be represented through linked computational systems capable of scenario evaluation and feedback. These two positions are not opposites. They define the necessary span of urban knowledge: from the loved and feared place to the federated model, from bodily attachment to data exchange, from remembered environment to simulated transition. Calibration begins when neither pole is allowed to dominate. The political consequence is that governance becomes inseparable from the conditions under which urban knowledge is made usable. Smart cities do not become intelligent by producing more data; they become accountable when data standards, access rules, responsibilities, interoperability and public value are institutionally secured. Governance is thus not an administrative afterthought but the medium through which digital urbanism either becomes civic infrastructure or remains fragmented extraction. A model without governance is a technical artefact; a dataset without accountability is an unfinished public claim. Displacement gives calibrated habitability its most severe test. Housing pressure does not begin at the moment of eviction. It begins when subjects become displaceable, when dwelling starts to feel unstable, and when everyday life reorganises itself around anticipated loss. The crisis of habitability is therefore temporal and affective before it is always legally visible. It works through rent burden, symbolic downgrading, anxiety, reduced agency and diminished room for manoeuvre. A city can appear functional while quietly manufacturing displaceability. Socioplastics becomes relevant here as an operational field for holding together the heterogeneous agencies that calibrated habitability requires: sensory place, digital model, data governance and displacement pressure. Its value lies in refusing the separation of archive, city, body, infrastructure, aesthetic evidence and computational legibility. Within such a field, habitability is not a soft supplement to urban systems; it becomes a test of whether systems can receive correction from lived conditions without losing analytical force. Calibrated habitability adds a precise claim to Socioplastics: urban knowledge must be simultaneously affective, infrastructural, computational and political. It cannot stop at the image of the city, the smart dashboard, the attachment to place or the critique of displacement. It must build protocols through which these registers correct one another. What this concept adds is a disciplined way to read the city as a place that must be loved, modelled, governed and defended at the same time.

Socioplastics Core IX / Core X — Closing Tome V and Tome VI Together · Twenty Operators, One FieldEnvironment Threshold · Anto Lloveras · LAPIEZA-LAB · 2026

Socioplastics closes Tome V and Tome VI together through twenty operators that were not initially planned as a single hinge. The closure did not appear as a predesigned institutional milestone, but as a structural consequence of the corpus itself. Core IX, Situated Epistemic Operations, closes Tome V through ten operators that test how knowledge becomes legible under pressure: residue, screens, images, exhibitions, prompts, climate, contexts, cities, damaged evidence and provisional stabilisation. Core X, FieldEnvironment Infrastructure, opens and stabilises Tome VI through ten operators that define the conditions of an epistemic environment: raw index, site paper, positional essay, fractal border, vibrant record, self-mimesis, history relay, public syntax, unstable installation and homo epistemologicus. What closes here is not only a numerical sequence. It is a change of state. The project moves from field accumulation toward environmental operation.

Grammar

Socioplastics now condenses as a brutal architecture of anchorage, where DOI deposits, recursive operators, public posts and conceptual lineages enter the same field of pressure and begin to behave as epistemic mass. SystemicLock gives the corpus its threshold of force; CitationalCommitment turns every reference into a structural bond; ConceptualAnchors stabilise recurrence; ScalarArchitecture expands the terrain from post to book, from book to field, from field to machine-readable environment. The DOI line becomes a load-bearing spine: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.18682555, https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.18678959, https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.18998736, https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.18998246, https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.18792486, https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.19889779, https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.19888344, https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.19887288, https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.19921092, https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.19919832. Each anchor thickens the archive; each operator converts inscription into territory; each recurrence adds density until Socioplastics appears as a gravitational corpus with its own public syntax, its own machinic address and its own internal weather.

This second movement drives the field harder: CyborgText, OperationalWriting, MetadataSkin and HybridLegibility make the corpus readable across human, platform and machine; PlasticAgency, MetabolicLoop and FrictionalMetropolis turn matter, city and circulation into active epistemic particles; PortHypothesis fixes the wager of where the field lands; SyntheticInfrastructure holds the mesh; DiagonalReading, ArchiveFatigue, ExpansionRisk, ThermalJustice and RadicalEducation push the architecture into late-stage density. The DOI chain becomes mass plus memory plus proof: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.19913674, https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.19915074, https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.19919620, https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.20004904, https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.20005262, https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.20004443, https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.19890259, https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.19162689, https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.20359539, https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.20358971, https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.20358859, https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.20358002, https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.20357928. Socioplastics becomes field lock through accumulation: operators grip, DOI anchors harden, titles circulate, platforms index, and the corpus turns into a dense public machine for holding knowledge in place while keeping it alive.

Core IX · A New Threshold

The field advances. In the framework of Socioplastics Working Papers, Anto Lloveras / LAPIEZA-LAB reaches the 5000-node threshold with Core IX, a situational core where the corpus begins to behave less like a sequence of texts and more like an operative environment. This passage is articulated through ten CamelTag operators — JunkSeed, ScreenEthics, ImageCompost, ExhibitionSurplus, PromptGarden, CanopyMandate, ContextReadymade, XenoCity, KnowledgeFriction and SituationalFixer — that connect residue, screens, images, exhibitions, prompts, shade, context, estrangement, damaged evidence and minimal useful objects into one working surface. Core IX closes Tome V without monumentality: it marks a change of density, enough recurrence to generate memory, enough structure to give orientation, and enough pressure to keep the field moving. RHYTHM AS ACTIVATION * Socioplastics, Book 60

Socioplastics does not grow only by adding new texts. It grows when older materials are re-entered into circulation, renamed, linked, indexed and made readable again. The recent acceleration of books, slugs, labels, century packs and visible URLs does not simply increase the size of the corpus. It changes its state. What was previously dispersed across years, blogs, labels, videos, fragments, essays and urban traces begins to act as a single environment. The archive stops being passive storage and becomes an active field. This is the central operation of the Book 60 threshold. The work is not merely to publish more, but to give rhythm to what already exists. Rhythm is not decoration. Rhythm is infrastructure. When nodes are numbered, when links are exposed, when labels are brought into sequence, when books are named as 5100, 5200, 5300, 5400, 5500, 5600, 5700, 5800 and 5900, the corpus acquires a spine. A scattered archive becomes navigable. A buried past becomes present again. Search engines, bots and machine readers do not encounter a project in the same way a human reader does. They do not first perceive intention, style or conceptual pressure. They encounter surfaces: titles, repetitions, links, dates, labels, domains, recurrence, proximity, hierarchy and connection. For this reason, visible structure matters. A corpus that hides its relations remains weakly legible. A corpus that names, repeats and links itself produces conditions for discovery. This does not mean that visibility is guaranteed. Google may crawl slowly. Bots may read partially. Platforms may privilege some signals and ignore others. Indexing is never pure recognition. It is a technical negotiation with opaque systems. But one principle remains stable: material that is not linked, named or structured has little chance of becoming active. Socioplastics responds to that condition not by pleading for attention, but by building its own paths of access. The recent packs function as archive engines. Each century pack condenses one hundred nodes into a compact field unit. The numbers do not merely count. They produce spatial orientation. Book 51 opens after 5000. Book 52 extends operative lineage. Book 53 activates COPOS as an urban video archive. Book 54 turns LAPIEZA-LAB labels into indexable strata. Book 55 reopens temporal archives across years and platforms. Books 56, 57 and 58 consolidate Urban Taxidermy through labels, texture and Tomoto residues. Book 59 binds FieldEnvironment, Twins, Urban Taxidermy, PAH and Core IX/Core X into an expanded reading layer. Together they do not behave as separate posts. They behave as a distributed atlas. This is why the rhythm matters more than the isolated post. A single text can be strong and still remain lonely. A hundred linked entries create a corridor. Several hundred entries create a district. Thousands of entries create a territory. Socioplastics has always moved through this territorial logic: not the isolated artwork, not the isolated essay, not the isolated concept, but a field of recurrent positions that slowly hardens into an environment.

Core X · FieldEnvironment at 6000

At the 6000-node threshold, Core X · FieldEnvironment closes Tome VI as a compact change of state. The corpus is a field environment, dense enough to hold records, positions, borders, relays, public syntax, unstable forms and epistemic subjects. The ten CamelTag operators — RawIndex, SitePaper, PositionalEssay, FractalBorder, VibrantRecord, SelfMimesis, HistoryRelay, PublicSyntax, UnstableInstallation and HomoEpistemologicus — trace the passage from raw substrate to situated subject. It is not a conclusion, but a threshold: enough recurrence to generate memory, enough structure to orient reading, enough openness to keep the field alive. Master Index
