SemanticHardening describes the process through which a provisional formulation ceases to function as one interpretation among many and becomes the infrastructural vocabulary through which a phenomenon is recognised, financed, regulated and remembered. Its force originates in repetition: recurrent phrases circulate efficiently across journalism, policy, search engines and everyday speech, while less familiar alternatives gradually lose visibility. Institutional adoption intensifies this effect because budgets, contracts, taxonomies and legal procedures become dependent upon semantic continuity, thereby making terminological revision administratively expensive. Algorithmic systems further accelerate hardening by ranking familiar expressions, reproducing them through autocomplete and embedding them within generative-model outputs. Cognitive fluency and professional signalling reinforce the process socially, since established vocabulary appears natural, competent and collectively intelligible, whereas deviation demands explanation. Artificial intelligence provides a decisive case study. Terms such as “foundation model”, “alignment” and “hallucination” initially emerged as contingent descriptions but rapidly became organising categories for research, regulation, benchmarking and public controversy. Their recurrence across papers, interfaces and policy documents now structures what questions appear legitimate. SemanticHardening therefore converges with RecurrenceMass, which supplies frequency; CitationalCommitment, which establishes dependency; and TopolexicalSovereignty, which grants territorial authority to the dominant name. Yet linguistic stabilisation is not intrinsically detrimental, because shared terminology enables coordination and cumulative inquiry. The critical task is to preserve reversibility through versioned concepts, provenance records, parallel vocabularies and periodic semantic reopening. Language remains responsible infrastructure only when its authority continues to earn justification.
