THE NAME A COMMUNITY TOOK BACK FROM THE MAP

A community gives its own name to a contested landscape instead of accepting an administrative label imposed upon it. The new name enters maps, legal claims and public memory. Naming becomes territorial because it changes who can define the place. Test it by comparing decisions made under each name. If the vocabulary changes the recognized history, users or rights attached to the site, lexical sovereignty is active.
