The field is synthetic because it generates common conceptual operations across disciplines; expansive because those operations remain open to new situations; modern because it is designed for distributed and machine-mediated knowledge; and classical because it seeks clarity, durability and systematic consequence. Its distinctiveness does not lie in the number of subjects it touches, but in the precision with which it makes their hidden relations available for thought.
