A Genealogy of Epistemological Conversion


A genealogy of resonance only identifies proximity; a genealogy of conversion reveals construction. Socioplastics does not gather historical thinkers as symbolic ancestors or assemble a catalogue of intellectual influences. It extracts operational capacities from their work and translates them into mechanisms capable of functioning inside a contemporary conceptual architecture. The relevant question is therefore not what these thinkers believed, but what their concepts allow a system to do once transformed into procedures, constraints, and instruments of organisation. The first group concerns the conditions through which knowledge becomes possible. From Gaston Bachelard, Socioplastics adopts the principle that knowledge advances through transformation rather than accumulation. The epistemological break becomes an architectural rule: concepts cannot simply accumulate indefinitely but must contain the possibility of revision, correction, and renewal. An operator such as ClaimDecay does not represent failure; it formalises the recognition that every conceptual structure carries the conditions of its own future revision. From Ernst Cassirer comes the understanding that concepts are symbolic forms: they do not merely describe reality but organise the ways in which reality becomes perceptible. 



The CamelTag follows this logic by functioning as a constructed instrument of intelligibility, a symbolic device whose value lies in the relations it establishes rather than in a hidden essence it reveals. Nicholas of Cusa contributes the productive role of incompleteness. Through the principle of learned ignorance, Socioplastics preserves unresolved intervals as active epistemological spaces, recognising that certain forms of knowledge emerge precisely through the maintenance of openness. Ludwik Fleck provides the social dimension of knowing: no concept exists outside the communities and styles of thought that make it visible. The twelve-channel structure therefore operates as a distributed thought-collective, exposing identical operators to different disciplinary conditions of interpretation. Peirce supplies the logic of semiotic continuation: a marker never reaches a final meaning but acquires significance through the chain of interpretations it generates. Wittgenstein completes this movement by grounding authority in practice: an operator becomes legitimate through repeated use, through the situations in which it continues to organise understanding. The second group provides the formal grammar of the system. Leibniz contributes the dream of a conceptual calculus, the possibility that thought can be organised through relations precise enough to become operational without losing complexity. Socioplastics translates this into the demand for concepts that remain simultaneously human-readable and computationally addressable. Spencer-Brown provides the elementary operation: every form begins with a distinction. The marker is therefore not a description added after meaning appears; it is the original act through which a field of meaning becomes structured. Wiener contributes the logic of feedback, transforming correction from an external intervention into an internal capacity. A system survives through mechanisms that allow its own transformations to inform future states. Bertalanffy extends this principle from isolated mechanisms to general organisation, allowing heterogeneous materials — artistic, ecological, urban, technological — to participate in one architecture through shared operational rules. The third group concerns persistence and self-production. Bateson's ecology of mind provides the idea that concepts exist within environments of relation. Meaning is never isolated inside a single element but sustained through patterns connecting elements together. Whitehead contributes a processual ontology in which entities are understood through becoming rather than permanence. A node in Socioplastics is therefore not a finished object but a temporary crystallisation within an ongoing process of conceptual formation. Luhmann provides the strongest model for large-scale coherence: a complex system maintains itself through recursive operations that reproduce its own distinctions. The corpus does not depend on a central authority because its unity emerges through repeated acts of continuation, reference, and transformation. The fourth group addresses territory and circulation. Humboldt contributes a vision of knowledge based on relations rather than isolated objects, where phenomena become intelligible through networks of interdependence. Ibn Khaldun introduces historical dynamics based on cycles of cohesion and transformation, supporting a model of genealogy understood as uneven transmission rather than linear descent. Lefebvre transforms space into a productive operation: territory is not a container but something continuously produced through practices of naming, inhabiting, and organising. DeLanda provides the mechanism of assemblage, allowing autonomous components to enter relations without losing their specificity. Deleuze and Guattari contribute the rhizomatic model of multiplication without a privileged origin, supporting a structure whose growth occurs through connection rather than hierarchy. The fifth group concerns authority, mediation, and technical conditions. Duchamp provides the logic of contextual transformation: meaning changes when the relations surrounding an object change. Socioplastics extends this principle by treating context itself as an operative material. Foucault contributes the analysis of discursive conditions, showing that authority emerges through distributed structures that determine what can appear as legitimate knowledge. Kittler adds the technological dimension: every regime of knowledge depends on infrastructures of inscription, storage, and transmission. Latour provides the model of circulating reference, where the strength of a claim depends on the network of transformations that sustains it. Malabou contributes plasticity, the capacity of a form to receive and produce transformation while maintaining recognisable continuity. Vico finally provides the confidence that constructed systems can be analysed precisely because they are made: human formations become knowable through the structures of their own production.


Across these five groups, the genealogy reveals a consistent operation. Socioplastics does not preserve philosophical concepts as historical monuments; it converts them into active mechanisms. Epistemological rupture becomes revision, symbolic form becomes the operator, semiotics becomes recurrence, systems theory becomes architecture, territory becomes distribution, and authority becomes traceability. The thinkers assembled here did not create Socioplastics, but their concepts provided the conditions through which such a structure could become conceivable. The genealogy is therefore not a map of influences but an inventory of transformations. Each thinker enters the corpus not as an authority to be repeated, but as a mechanism to be tested. What emerges is a conceptual ecology in which historical ideas continue to operate because they have been translated into new conditions of use.
