Beyer and colleagues consolidate the neighbourhood as a meaningful scale for population mental health. Drawing on the Survey of the Health of Wisconsin, the study associates higher levels of surrounding green space with lower symptom levels for depression, anxiety and stress while controlling for a broad set of confounders and length of residence. The latter adjustment is methodologically important because it addresses, although cannot eliminate, residential self-selection. The paper also situates greenness within several possible mechanisms: mitigation of environmental hazards, opportunities for physical activity, social cohesion and psychological restoration. Its theoretical contribution is therefore not a single causal claim but an environmental-pathway model in which spatial exposure enters health through multiple interacting systems. The neighbourhood is treated as an everyday field of repeated contact, particularly consequential for populations whose mobility beyond the local environment may be constrained. This provides a bridge from environmental epidemiology to equitable planning by framing access to supportive surroundings as a population-health resource.
