DARWIN, ODUM, CARSON, HARAWAY, LATOUR, DE LA BELLACASA — ECOLOGY, DEPENDENCE AND MORE-THAN-HUMAN RELATIONS



Nothing in this genealogy stands alone, which is, admittedly, a strange thing to have to keep saying about ecology of all subjects — and yet each of these six writers had to fight, in their own moment, against a stubborn habit of treating organisms, species or human institutions as if they could be understood in isolation. Darwin's significance lies not only in natural selection as such but in the relational conception of life that evolutionary theory makes unavoidable: organisms exist within histories of variation, competition, cooperation and environmental pressure, and species are never fixed essences but ongoing outcomes of these histories. Odum's ecosystem ecology then provides a systems vocabulary for energy flow, trophic relation and material cycling, showing that ecosystems can be studied through exchanges of energy and matter across boundaries — material flow becomes analytically meaningful only once it is linked to metabolism, nutrient cycles and hydrology, rather than treated as a loose metaphor for connectedness in general.


Carson introduces toxicity and political responsibility into this same lineage. Silent Spring shows that environmental damage can be distributed across space and time while remaining almost impossible to perceive directly, so exposure, persistence and cumulative effect become central categories in their own right; environmental harm can stay structurally invisible until evidence has been painstakingly assembled across multiple scales at once. Haraway complicates human exceptionalism through situated knowledge and multispecies thinking, arguing that knowledge is always partial and embodied, and that relations among species are historical, technical and affective all at once. A more-than-human analysis does not require erasing difference among organisms; it requires recognising that human worlds are co-produced with non-human agencies whether we notice this or not. Latour extends relational analysis still further through actor-network theory and his later work on terrestrial politics, refusing any clean separation between nature and society — climate, soil, infrastructure, policy and knowledge production all belong to a single linked assemblage. De la Bellacasa closes the group by introducing care as an ecological and epistemic practice in its own right: care is not merely moral sentiment but material maintenance, because soil, food, technology and research all require ongoing attention if they are to persist at all.

Sustainability, read through this genealogy, becomes meaningful only once a mechanism has actually been specified — carbon, biodiversity, hydrology, toxicity, habitat, thermal exposure — which is just what distinguishes ecology from environmental rhetoric more broadly, and rhetoric is not a harmless failure mode: it is often the mechanism by which real harm gets postponed. The socially distributed weight of thermal exposure is worth naming HeatSentence, since climate, urban form and inequality converge there on a single body or neighbourhood in a way no average can capture; call the treatment of soil as habitat, archive and political resource all at once SoilCustody. This genealogy transforms urbanism as well, because trees become climate infrastructure whose effects depend heavily on species, maintenance and distribution, and adaptation becomes unavoidably political the moment some groups have far greater capacity than others to avoid exposure. It transforms architecture and design in much the same way: materials connect to extraction frontiers and waste long before they arrive on any construction site, and buildings become ecological actors through energy use, albedo, water and habitat, whether or not this was ever the designer's intention. Ecological systems reveal, above everything else, that autonomy is always partial. Human institutions depend on energy, water, soils, climates and living systems they cannot fully control — a fact easy to state and remarkably hard to build a field around, which is the work this genealogy exists to do.
