A system that never returns to anything it has already done cannot really be said to remember, even if every past state is technically logged somewhere in its records; functional memory requires the past to act on the present rather than remain inert and unconsulted. Recurrence supplies this action: a pattern returns at intervals, and each return re-engages the system with its own history in a way that pure storage cannot. MaintenanceReturn names the deliberate re-entry of prior knowledge required to keep a system coherent while allowing it to change. Recurrence, rather than storage capacity, therefore reveals whether a system has learned from its history or merely archived it.
