Tsai and colleagues challenge the reduction of urban nature to simple quantity. Examining 276 U.S. metropolitan counties, they derive seven landscape metrics from national land-cover data and relate them to frequent mental distress. Their key contribution is morphological: pattern characteristics such as edge contrast, cohesion and spatial separation can show stronger associations with mental health than total percentage of green cover alone. Green space is therefore not only an amount but a spatial configuration. The methodological operation translates landscape ecology into public-health analysis, enabling fragmentation, continuity and adjacency to become psychological variables at metropolitan scale. This matters for urbanism because two areas with similar percentages of vegetation may generate very different environmental experiences depending on how that vegetation is distributed. The wider intellectual bridge connects environmental psychology to landscape ecology and spatial morphology, opening a route from generic greenness indicators toward questions of configuration, accessibility, continuity and perceptual structure that are closer to architectural and urban design decisions.
