This immediately unsettles the idea that sustainability can be governed through universal environmental goods. Quinton and Nesbitt show that apparently different forms of green, ecological, climate and resilience gentrification repeatedly describe sustainability-led production of space for more affluent populations. Anguelovski and colleagues demonstrate, however, that this process is institutionally contingent. Similar greening pressures generate different outcomes where housing protections, racial histories and real-estate regimes differ. Droste and Gianoli sharpen the same point through configurational analysis: no single green intervention reliably produces gentrification because political effects emerge through combinations of existing neighbourhood conditions. Environmental consequence is relational before it is causal. Epistemic justice determines which consequences become visible early enough to modify a project. Mohtat and Khirfan show that technically sophisticated flood adaptation can remain structurally ignorant when local experiential knowledge is not recognised as credible evidence. Residents may know where runoff accumulates, which routes become inaccessible or how vulnerability is lived, yet technocratic valuation systems can exclude this knowledge before siting decisions are made. Planning injustice therefore begins prior to spatial exclusion. It begins in the architecture of admissible knowledge. A city can possess data and still be epistemically poor when its decision systems cannot register the experiences of those most exposed to environmental risk.
Digital sensing expands the field without resolving this problem. Huang and colleagues’ combination of satellite NDVI and street-level Green View Index demonstrates that no single observational regime contains the whole urban environment. A satellite sees canopy and vegetation density; street imagery sees visibility, shrubs and walls encountered by pedestrians. The distinction is not technical trivia. Each measurement constructs a different object called urban greenery, and each can support different planning decisions. The epistemology of the green city therefore resides partly in its sensor position. What can be governed depends on what can be detected, and what can be detected depends on the apparatus through which the city is rendered visible. A multispecies perspective makes the limits of human-centred evidence even clearer. Fairbairn and colleagues show that public squares designed for human use simultaneously construct habitat for birds, insects, bats, small mammals, bryophytes and spontaneous plants. Different taxa respond differently to shrubs, lawns, trees, light, people and pets. Perrelet and colleagues extend this argument into engineered systems, proposing blue-green infrastructure designed both for and with biodiversity. The shift is profound: urban nature is no longer infrastructure that performs ecosystem services for humans while accidentally hosting other organisms. It becomes a reciprocal technical-ecological system whose inhabitants have incompatible requirements and whose trade-offs must be explicitly designed. The political economy and the multispecies ecology of greening thus converge around one question: who or what is allowed to remain when urban environmental value increases? A newly improved park can intensify rent pressure; a highly manicured square can reduce habitat complexity; a drainage system optimised for flow can eliminate ecological processes; an adaptation programme can exclude residents whose experiential knowledge does not fit administrative categories. “Improvement” is always indexed to an evaluator. The concept must therefore be decomposed into multiple consequences rather than accepted as an environmental absolute. Socioplastics can operationalise this by indexing ecological interventions through consequence rather than category. A source should not merely be tagged “green infrastructure” or “urban biodiversity”; it should record the operations through which an intervention redistributes access, credibility, heat, habitat, value, connectivity, risk or displacement. Such a corpus could trace how an apparently benign object—tree, park, rain garden, biodiversity retrofit—changes state as it passes through planning, sensing, property markets, ecological networks and public use. This would transform environmental knowledge from a thematic collection into a map of contested effects.
