Difference becomes epistemically productive when a framework can hold incompatible positions without reducing them to noise or forcing them into premature agreement. Walking research, situated curating and non-formal pedagogy all expose the same condition: knowledge is generated through encounters in which bodies, places and histories do not line up neatly.

Dissensus is therefore not a failure of collaboration. It is a method for keeping the structure of disagreement visible long enough for it to produce new distinctions. Situatedness gives dissensus its ground. Every claim has a position, route, duration and material condition. Springgay and Truman show that walking can disrupt inherited spatial and temporal orders; Sinner demonstrates that embodied inquiry can transform presumptions; Ruitenberg shows that repetition and emergent curriculum can generate educational consequences that were not scripted in advance. These practices all resist the fiction that one can separate method from context. Curating becomes political when it preserves these differences as operative relations. The task is not to represent a plurality of voices and then close the exhibition, but to construct situations in which different positions can affect the interpretation and trajectory of the work. Issue 53 makes this visible through situated knowledge and shared action; Extreme sharpens it through marginality, borders and subjugated knowledge. Curatorial practice becomes the organisation of a field in which asymmetry remains legible. The aesthetic implication is a shift from harmony to tension. Maps, walks, scores, archives and conversations become forms that can carry disagreement without dissolving it. Their value lies in making differences comparable while preserving their specific conditions. A good curatorial object is therefore not necessarily one that resolves conflict; it may instead clarify where interpretations diverge and what those divergences reveal. Socioplastics can use dissensus as a classification principle. Relations need not be coded only as confirmed or rejected; they can remain robust, conditional, contested, local or unresolved. This expands the corpus from a repository of assertions into an infrastructure capable of representing epistemic friction. The field grows stronger when contradiction is not immediately repaired.
