Neighbourhoods act on wellbeing through capacities distributed across social relations, material form, habitual movement and the meanings attached to everyday places. This makes the neighbourhood neither a passive container nor a simple exposure variable. It is an environment whose effects emerge through use, recognition, accessibility, sociality and the possibility of forming durable relations with people and settings. Charlotte Wendelboe-Nelson and colleagues demonstrate this in their mixed-methods evaluation of outdoor health interventions for refugees, migrants and asylum-seekers. Walking and cycling in outdoor environments produced benefits that standard wellbeing scales only partially captured, while qualitative work revealed the social component of shared activity as critical.
Their result is methodological as much as empirical: urban wellbeing cannot be adequately understood when quantitative instruments strip away the situated social processes through which environments become supportive. Pui-Hang Wong, Karima Kourtit and Peter Nijkamp reach a related conclusion at a different scale through meta-analysis. Synthesising studies of neighbourhood interventions, they show that place-based interventions can produce short-term effects on mental health and subjective wellbeing, but that effects are unevenly distributed across population groups and types of environment. The neighbourhood is therefore an active but differentiated field of consequence. Anja Heilmann and collaborators specify one mechanism through neighbourhood belonging and social cohesion. In an ethnically diverse English sample, higher belonging and cohesion were associated with stronger parental mental wellbeing, while effects on children were more complex. The result resists a simplistic environmental determinism: social cohesion is neither a decorative outcome of good design nor a universal protective factor, but a relational condition whose effects depend on population, family structure and social context. Renee Zahnow sharpens the distinction between physical type and lived function. Her study of everyday neighbourhood places shows that attachment is not produced by category alone. Socialisation places generate especially strong attachment because shared purpose, recurrent encounters and recognisable communities convert locations into relational anchors. Local consumption places such as cafés and stores become more strongly attached when users experience them socially rather than merely functionally. Place attachment therefore emerges from practice and meaning, not simply morphology. Justin Eng and Gavin McCormack add movement to this account by analysing place identity, place dependence and walkability in Calgary neighbourhoods. Their findings show that objectively measured street patterns and affective or functional attachments interact in nuanced ways with recreational and transport walking. Urban design may create opportunities for movement, but behavioural effects are conditioned by how residents identify with and depend on their neighbourhood. The relationship between form and action is configurational, not automatic. Yalun Lei and colleagues bring computational urban perception into the same field. Using street-view imagery, deep learning, multiscale geographically weighted regression and space syntax in Shanghai, they demonstrate significant spatial heterogeneity in restorative perception. Trees, sidewalks, buildings, walls, open parks, waterfronts and network accessibility do not contribute uniformly across space; their effects vary geographically and combine differently in specific street contexts. Their contribution is important because it turns environmental perception into a spatially explicit and mappable phenomenon while retaining heterogeneity rather than averaging it away. High restorative perception clusters near green spaces, waterfronts and high-quality buildings, whereas deteriorated infrastructure and constrained public space correlate with lower perceptions. Quentin Stevens and colleagues introduce temporality through pop-up parks that become permanent. Their comparative analysis shows that temporary urban interventions can operate as low-cost, reversible tests of public-space transformation. Through mapping, planning documents, interviews and longitudinal trajectories, temporary spaces become instruments that produce evidence about use, support, spatial performance and institutional possibility. The neighbourhood therefore acquires another capacity: it can learn through reversible intervention. Across these studies, urban wellbeing is generated by a compound relation among spatial quality, social attachment, movement, experimentation and interpretive method. A restorative environment is not simply green, walkable or socially cohesive; it is one in which physical and social affordances become mutually reinforcing and can be recognised through methods sensitive to both measurable conditions and lived experience. Socioplastics can operationalise neighbourhood capacity by treating urban traces as evidence of relations rather than as isolated representations of place. A photograph of a street, a walking route, a temporary intervention, an interview, a statistical association or a map of restorative perception each captures a different layer of the same urban field. Their value increases when the archive preserves the relations among them. Wendelboe-Nelson’s mixed-methods design demonstrates why this matters: quantitative scales can miss the social mechanisms through which outdoor activity produces wellbeing, while qualitative encounters reveal processes that numbers alone cannot register. A transdisciplinary archive should therefore permit incompatible evidential forms to coexist without forcing them into a single hierarchy. Wong and colleagues add the need for distributional sensitivity. Neighbourhood interventions do not act identically across populations, so an urban corpus should preserve subgroup, duration and contextual variation whenever claims about wellbeing are made. A field that records only average effect reproduces the abstraction that the empirical work itself complicates. Heilmann’s analysis of belonging and cohesion suggests a second archival principle: social relations are spatial evidence. They should not be treated as secondary annotations appended to material environments but as components of how environments operate. Zahnow reinforces this by showing that function can outweigh type. The same spatial category may support very different attachments depending on how it is used, with whom, and how frequently. This implies that Socioplastics should resist purely morphological indexing of urban situations. A café, park, gym, street or public square becomes theoretically legible when physical form is connected to social function, recurrence, identity and use. Eng and McCormack’s work on walkability adds a movement layer: spatial accessibility is not equivalent to spatial experience. Routes, habits and attachments generate a lived topology that may diverge from objective network measures. Such divergence is not noise but evidence. Lei and colleagues show how computational methods can expand this field without replacing situated interpretation. Street-view data, deep learning and spatial regression can identify large-scale patterns in perception, but their most useful contribution lies in revealing heterogeneity—where the same visual element has different effects and where accessibility and restoration coincide or diverge. Socioplastics can adopt this logic by using computational tools to multiply comparisons while keeping local variation visible. Stevens and colleagues provide the temporal counterpart. A temporary intervention is an archive of possible futures because it records how urban arrangements perform before becoming fixed. If the intervention later becomes permanent, the relation between trial and institutionalisation becomes a crucial longitudinal sequence. A distributed corpus should therefore connect states through time rather than treat each document as a final object. This transforms the archive into an urban observatory capable of following attachment, wellbeing and spatial change as processes. The larger consequence is epistemic. Neighbourhood capacity cannot be reduced to a list of design attributes because it emerges through interactions among people, infrastructures, meanings and durations. The task of the field is to maintain enough relational density for those interactions to remain legible. This includes not only successful spaces but also weak attachments, low restorative perception, failed interventions, contradictory responses and uneven benefits. Such negative or ambiguous evidence prevents wellbeing from becoming an aesthetic slogan. Public legibility then depends on showing how claims are constructed: which methods recorded the effect, which populations were involved, what spatial scale was used, and what temporal interval separated intervention from outcome. Socioplastics becomes capable of holding psychological, spatial, social and infrastructural evidence within one operational grammar while preserving the specificity of each register. The neighbourhood is thereby understood as a dynamic capacity to support attachment, movement, recognition, restoration and collective experimentation. The same logic makes longitudinality indispensable. Attachment, cohesion and restorative perception are not instantaneous properties of space; they are accumulated through repetition, memory, familiarity, conflict and changing social composition. A neighbourhood that appears supportive at one moment may become exclusionary, inaccessible or fragile under demographic, climatic or economic pressure. Repeated observations therefore convert urban wellbeing from a static score into a trajectory. This allows interventions to be judged not only by immediate response but by persistence, adaptation and distribution over time, producing a richer account of how environments participate in collective life.
