Lättman, K., Welsch, J., Otsuka, N., van der Vlugt, A.-L., De Vos, J. and Prichard, E. (2025) ‘Walking travel satisfaction – A comparison of three European cities’, Journal of Urban Mobility, 7, 100109. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.urbmob.2025.100109.

A comparison across three European cities makes the distance between walking as infrastructure and walking as experience empirically tractable. Lättman and colleagues examine walking travel satisfaction across distinct urban contexts, showing why objective provision cannot simply stand in for the perceived quality of a journey. Their methodological contribution is a cross-city comparative design that asks how travel characteristics and subjective evaluations can be placed in relation without being conflated. This is an unusually close comparator for HoodKnows and a concrete contribution from a researcher already within its partnership. It links transport psychology, urban mobility and environmental experience. Its value is also disciplinary restraint: established measurement instruments should be studied and adapted before new ones are proposed. The research programme should be explicit about which constructs are psychometrically tested, which are exploratory and which observations cannot be standardised without loss.
