GROUNDFLOORPOROSITY: WHY URBAN ACCESS DEPENDS ON RULES AND USES AS MUCH AS BUILDING OPENINGS — HENRI LEFEBVRE · LEWIS MUMFORD · JANE JACOBS · KELLER EASTERLING — ANTO LLOVERAS · SOCIOPLASTICS · LAPIEZA-LAB · MADRID, SPAIN · NOVEMBER 2026

A transparent façade does not necessarily offer public access. Entry may depend on prices, security, operating hours, informal permission or the ability to remain without buying anything. GroundfloorPorosity is a Socioplastics operator for studying how built thresholds and institutional rules jointly shape everyday urban use. Lefebvre connects space to social practices; Mumford situates buildings within historical institutions; Jacobs gives priority to street-level observation; and Easterling examines the protocols that organise spatial behaviour. The essay proposes comparing two similar ground floors through observations of entry, waiting, shelter, exchange and return across different times and users. It rejects a simple equation between openness and public benefit: some boundaries protect privacy and safety. The relevant question is which uses become possible, for whom, under what conditions, and how durable those permissions are.
