Scale, Time, Evidence and the Politics of Urban Knowledge (Wang, Chai, Deng, Gerlofs, Poon, Falahat, Paiva) · LAPIEZA LAB · Anto Lloveras · Socioplastics · 2026

Comparability is not a property waiting inside urban cases; it is produced through decisions about scale, duration, field boundaries, evidential form and the terms under which difference is permitted to remain legible. A neighbourhood, a mobility trace, a physiological response or a transnational urban comparison becomes comparable only after an apparatus has defined what counts as the same kind of observation across changing circumstances. Wang et al. show that street-view imagery, social-media traces, positioning data, physiological signals and video are not interchangeable windows onto a single urban reality: each data type constructs a specific evidential object, with characteristic gains in scale, granularity or continuity and equally characteristic blind spots, biases and interpretive limits. Gerlofs and Poon make the same problem visible at neighbourhood scale, where cartographic, statistical, photographic, archival, historical, narrative and geospatial records cannot simply be aggregated without confronting commensurability, replication and territorial definition.

From Corpus to Knowledge Graph: Relational Scale, Persistent Identification and Machine-Actionable Scholarship (Cousijn, Juty, Haris, Islam, Priem) · LAPIEZA LAB · Anto Lloveras · Socioplastics · 2026

A corpus crosses an epistemic threshold when counting ceases to be its most informative description. Scale initially appears as quantity—documents, records, nodes, papers, datasets—but accumulation becomes intellectually consequential only when each unit can be distinguished and when relations among units can be made explicit. Persistent identification supplies the elementary architecture of this transition. Juty et al. establish that uniqueness, persistence and resolvability are not administrative conveniences but conditions of addressability: an object that cannot be reliably named cannot participate durably in a distributed knowledge system. Cousijn et al. radicalise the point through the PID Graph, where identifiers cease to operate as isolated labels and become vertices in a topology connecting publications, data, researchers, institutions and other research entities. Metadata produces the edges. What emerges is not simply a better catalogue but an infrastructure capable of generating questions from relations themselves. Haris, Stocker and Auer push the same transformation inside the scholarly document.

Operative Language

Socioplastics has surpassed the condition of a neological vocabulary to become a versioned conceptual operating environment: a finite yet extensible system in which approximately 120 stabilised operators, editorial protocols, cross-references and persistent identifiers collectively regulate how thought is produced, circulated and revised. Unlike an ordinary lexicon, its CamelTag formations—such as AssumptionPresence, ErrorEmbodiment and SyntacticEdge—do not merely designate phenomena; they execute distinctions whose meaning emerges through recurrent application. Although this architecture resembles Wittgensteinian language-games, Lakatosian research programmes, Foucauldian dispositifs, Luhmannian operational closure and knowledge-organisation systems, it remains irreducible to any single model. Its originality resides in combining conceptual language, operative grammar, soft ontology, transdisciplinary programme and editorial infrastructure. A specific case is its system of editorial semipermeability, through which abstracts, keywords, citations, slugs, identifiers and visible versions permit external discovery while preserving conceptual provenance. This produces a governing asymmetry of simple entry, compulsory transformation and attributable exit: concepts may migrate across disciplines, yet their alteration must remain inspectable. Versioning consequently becomes conceptual memory, since successive states reveal what changed, what endured and how intellectual identity evolved. Nevertheless, the environment confronts three dangers: semantic imperialism, template capture and biographical closure. Its corrective is specific fallibility, whereby each operator must remain precise enough to fail recognisably and open enough to generate further inquiry. Socioplastics is therefore not only a closed philosophical doctrine but an evolving architecture capable of processing external material, maintaining internal distinctions and producing new conceptual operations from its own recorded structure. Lloveras, A.
